چکیده

This study examines the roles of gesture repetition in the process of collaboratively shaping ideas. The data involve three college students brainstorming for the production of a short film. Employing primarily language and depictive gestures, the participants collaboratively shape ideas of the film scenes, characters’ actions, and camerawork; they accept or reject each other’s proposals, elaborate upon them, modify a part of them, and/or combine them into complex wholes. In particular, by repeating one another’s gestures (or components thereof), the participants can show their manipulation of one another’s ideas. On the one hand, the analyses demonstrate that the participants can indicate full acceptance of the previous speaker’s idea, a cooperative move, by fully repeating the gesture produced during its proposal. On the other hand, a partial or modified repeat of the previous gesture does not signal complete acceptance of the previous proposal: the repeated feature of the gesture represents an accepted part of the previous proposal, but the modified feature of the gesture reveals exactly what the speaker does not accept and suggests instead. The present study thus demonstrates how repetition or modification of gestures across speakers serves to create coherence and to display cooperation and competition. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. WordPlay: A Table-Top Interface for Collaborative Brainstorming and Decision Making

In this paper, we present “WordPlay”, a collaborative tabletop interface for generating, organizing, and exploring ideas. The concepts, ideas and arguments discussed in a meeting around the table are visualized and can be organized and manipulated in natural ways by the participants. Users add ideas to the table by speaking, manipulate the properties of words with hand gestures, and explore rel...

Cross-Modal Grounding of Meaning

The current study investigates how the speaker grounds meaning for a referent by gestural repetition along with speech in daily conversation. The domain of analysis is the stretch of talk that encompasses the beginning and the end of the joint action during which a pair of similar gestures is produced by different speakers across turns to depict the same referent. A particular cross-modal groun...

Agent-based dynamic support for learning from collaborative brainstorming in scientific inquiry

This paper seeks to contribute new insight to the process of learning during idea generation (i.e., brainstorming) by proposing and evaluating two alternative operationalizations for learning, which we refer to as connection-based learning and multi-perspective learning, during a carefully designed idea-generation task in the earthsciences domain. Specifically, this paper presents two controlle...
